Developmental Assessment

What is a developmental assessment?

A developmental assessment identifies your child's development, compared to same-aged children, in the areas of language and communication, eye and hand coordination, gross motor, foundations of learning, and social and emotional development.

When to seek a developmental assessment?

If you have concerns about your child's development, and they are unable to participate in a formal cognitive (IQ) assessment then a developmental assessment is appropriate.

Why choose Rosie Psychology for a developmental assessment?

A developmental assessment at Rosie Psychology is fun, neuroaffirming, and considerate of your child’s needs. We understand that the assessment process can be an overwhelming process for some children, and we work closely with the family to ensure that this is as smooth as possible.

At Rosie Psychology we use evidence-based assessment tools, and our comprehensive reports are consistent with NDIS requirements and offer individualised and detailed recommendations. These recommendations are highly valuable in regard to implementing strategies at home, school or childcare and therapeutic settings, as well as establishing goals, for example with school learning plans and the NDIS.

We have several psychologists trained in delivering developmental assessments who have an excellent ability to engage with a range of children with complex needs. At Rosie Psychology, we pride ourselves on being a neuroaffirming practice. We offer a neurodivergent friendly assessment space to consider the child’s sensory needs and communication preferences. We respect and promote affirming terminology, and embrace a strengths-based approach.

What is involved in a developmental assessment at Rosie Psychology?

Our developmental assessment process involves:

  • An assessment session with your child: this takes up to two hours (with breaks) and accommodations are made by the psychologist to ensure your child feels comfortable. Please note the entire developmental assessment must be completed within a week.
  • We may obtain additional information from people who know your child well, for example school or childcare staff. We will send them questionnaires, and on occasion seek additional information via email/phone calls.
  • Occasionally, we need extra information and may need to observe your child at school/childcare. We will notify you if this additional session is required.

At Rosie Psychology we use the Griffiths Scales of Child Development along with other evidence-based assessment tools including the ABAS-3 or Vineland.

After the diagnostic formulation, you will meet with your psychologist for a feedback appointment to discuss the outcome of the assessment and you will be provided with a comprehensive report that includes individualised and detailed recommendations.

What information or diagnoses are possible from a developmental assessment?

  • A developmental assessment can be used to diagnose global developmental delay (GDD).
  • You will receive an 'age-equivalent' score in each of the above areas. This score tells us that your child could complete the skill at the level of a typically developing child who is x age.

 FAQ

  • Should I opt for a developmental assessment or a cognitive (IQ) assessment?
    • We will place you with a psychologist who is able to complete both developmental and cognitive assessments, so you can discuss this with your psychologist in your intake appointment based on a range of variables including your child's age and communication skills.
    • If needed, we will make the decision after meeting your child on the assessment day and are very happy to be flexible to gain the best information and outcomes for your child.
  • Do I need to attend these sessions?
    • Yes. For a developmental assessment we require a parent or carer to be present in the room.
  • Do I receive a Medicare rebate?
    • If your child is diagnosed with one of a list of certain disabilities then their assessment may attract a Medicare rebate for a developmental assessment, if referred by an appropriate medical practitioner.
